APL Walk
Join
us for the most fun filled day of the year! The APL is having its annual
Dog Walk and Pet Fair at the beautiful Cleveland Metroparks South Chagrin
Polo Fields on Saturday, May 22, 2004 rain or shine!
Come walk with or without a pet and stay for the "Shake A Leg" Pet Fair.
There will be lots of games and prizes for both you and your pet; this will
include some special surprises! Breakfast, lunch and beverages will be provided
for you, as well as, plenty of water for your canine companion.
Many local companies will have booths set up at the pet fair for you to
purchase items or just gather information. This is a great way for you to
get to know some other pet owners and familiarize yourself with the businesses
in our community.
Our goal for the APL "Shake A Leg" Dog Walk and Pet Fair is to raise $60,000
in funds this year. The past APL Dog Walks have been such a great success
we want to keep this tradition and set our goal even higher!
The APL would like to thank you in advance for your support and generosity.
They look forward to seeing you, your family and friends at the Animal Protective
League's annual Dog Walk and Pet Fair.
The APL currently looking for sponsors and volunteers to help make this
the best APL dog walk ever. If you are interested in helping in anyway,
please contact Rachel Cavanaugh,
Event and Marketing Coordinator, at 216-771-7579.

Dog Parks
With warmer weather on the way a lot of us are looking forward to visiting
some local dog parks. Several communities now have official and unofficial
dog parks. Many more are beginning initiatives to build dog parks
- including Brunswick, Cleveland Heights, Tremont and Westlake. If
you're looking for a dog park to visit, North Coast Dogs supports and recommends
www.clevelanddogparks.com for
information and directions.
Enjoying
the dog park
Dog parks are not for all dogs or all people. They can be a great
deal of fun and very entertaining. But there are also risks involved
that you should be aware of.
-
Not all dogs play nicely. Some dogs may fight and may bite
hard. Keep an eye out for bullies and don't hang around if there
are bully dogs (or people) at the park.
-
Clean up your dog's "messes." And keep them away
from other dogs' feces. It can carry disease.
-
Be careful entering and exiting the park. Most good
dog parks have double gate entrances. Be careful that
no dogs run out as you are entering.
-
Bring your own fresh water and a bowl to insure your dog
stays well hydrated.
-
Do not bring toys or treats as these can spark doggie conflicts
at the park.
A safer alternative
For more than a year now, North Coast Dogs has offered Dog Park Classes.
These are indoor climate controlled play groups at our Lakewood Learning Center.
All our dog park classes are size segregated and trainer supervised.
We also limit the number of "players" to 10. Dog Park Classes
are a big hit - economical - and designed with safety in mind.
Whether you choose to visit the local dog park or not we recommend you stop
by a Dog Park Class for some good experience with dog play plus training and
safety information.
Our partners at K9 Kingdom are also offering play groups. See News
Notes listing above.

Mentor Learning Center
We have pictures of the Mentor Learning Center coming soon. Class
started there last week and we're happy to report the place is beautiful
even while it's still under construction.
It's also big. That means in the months ahead we'll be offering some
of our most popular classes there including Fly Ball, Rally-O and Agility.
Stay tuned.

CGC
Grads
Congratulations to our most recent CGC / TDI graduates. This class
has become very popular and we've put a lot of dogs to work at local nursing
homes and hospitals. Brigg Myroniak (right) just finished his class.
He's also a regular at Dog Park Classes.
