Adolescent Dogs
Most
of us can handle this image of an adolescent puppy (Brodie pictured right).
But there's more to the story than a cute picture of a 6-month olds cuddled
up with a stuffed toy. For many, puppy adolescence can be a
challenging time.
As with people, adolescence in dogs is a time of physical, mental and social
maturation. It begins at roughly 5 - 6 months and can continue to
two years of age or older. Adolescence is marked by some key developmental
changes.
Is this the right time to train? Absolutely. In fact, training
is essential since your dog is developing mentally as well as physically an
socially. Below are some skills we recommend training at this time in
your dog's life.
- Core training (sit and down to prevent jumping and other mischief)
- Impulse control (stay and leave it).
- Attention exercises (watch me and eye contact while walking)
Almost all of our classes address these training goals and more.
For more information on adolescent development and training come to our "Raising
Your Adolescent Dog" seminar March 13th at the Richmond Heights Learning
Center.

Bright
Idea
Muddy Paws? No problem!
Ah the Spring thaw! We've waited for it for months now. But
now that the warmer weather has arrived there's a new problem. Mud
and slop. And our dogs couldn't care less if they track it into our
homes.
So, how do we keep the floors clean while keeping peace in the family?
Teach Fluffy to clean her own paws.
Juno and Phoebe taught me this one. Lay out a large absorbent towel
near the back door. When the dogs are on it cue them to "wait."
A standing wait is best. I noticed that my girls were willing to wait
but in their excitement they did a little dance, lifting their paws up and
down on the towel. Mud be gone!
Cleaning
your dog's paws.
The trick here is teaching your dog to enjoy having his paws cleaned.
It's not difficult. You can start training this right away.
Practice this a lot when you don't need to. In other words, get your
dog used to the process when his paws are already clean. This is kind
of like a rehearsal.
-
Practice near the door where you will be doing real-life paw cleaning.
-
Have a warm damp towel ready.
-
Have some treats nearby.
-
Gently but confidently rub the cloth on the underside of your dog's
paws.
-
Praise and treat.
-
Take a break - then repeat.
Warning: If your dog shows any signs of resentment or aggression while having
his paws handle call a North Coast Dogs trainer before preceding.
Being Prepared
Once your dog is ready for regular paw cleanings be ready. Keep your
supplies (damp towel, dry towel and treats) near the cleaning area at all
times.
More Help
Teaching your dog to have his feet handled regularly is a very bright idea.
This will also help you more easily trim nails and paw hair, both of which
will promote comfort and paw cleanliness. For more help, call North
Coast Dogs at 216-221-DOGS.
Brunswick Learning Center
We are sorry to announce North Coast Dogs will no longer be offering classes
at our former Brunswick Learning Center. The owners of that facility
have decided to expand their office space, greatly reducing the size of
the training facility there. We welcome our clients from the
Strongsville and Brunswick area to join us for classes at our Lakewood Learning
Center.
We'll pay for the gas ...
If you've taken classes with us at the former Brunswick Learning Center
and would like to join us for classes in Lakewood we'll pay for the gas!
Just ask for "the Brunswick discount" and we'll automatically
deduct 15% from your class fee (not valid with any other coupons of offers).
